Why the P30 Pro mattered for phone photography
When it launched, the P30 Pro pushed two ideas that are now standard on high-end phones. The first was a periscope telephoto lens: the 8MP zoom camera sits sideways in the body and uses a prism to fold light, giving a true 5x optical zoom in a slim handset. Rivals at the time mostly offered 2x telephoto lenses, so being able to frame distant subjects at 5x, and get usable 10x hybrid shots, was a genuine leap.
The second was the SuperSpectrum sensor. Most camera sensors use a red, green, green, blue (RGGB) filter pattern. Huawei swapped the green sub-pixels for yellow (RYYB), which lets more light through. How the camera holds up in 2026
In good light the main camera still produces sharp, detailed photos that look fine on social media and printed at normal sizes. The 5x zoom remains useful, and many current mid-range phones still lack a periscope lens at all. Colours and contrast are still good, but it runs at 60Hz, so scrolling looks less fluid than on today’s 90Hz and 120Hz screens, and peak brightness is lower than current flagships, which you notice outdoors on a sunny day. The optical in-display fingerprint reader works, though it is slower than modern ultrasonic sensors.
The body is glass front and back with an aluminium frame and IP68 dust and water resistance. On a used handset, do not rely on that rating: seals age, and any previous screen or battery repair may not have been resealed to factory standard. Huawei also removed the traditional earpiece grille; call audio comes from the screen vibrating, which kept bezels slim but sounds quieter than a conventional earpiece in noisy places.
Performance and battery
The Kirin 980 was one of the first 7nm phone chips and, with 8GB of RAM, still handles messaging, browsing, maps, streaming and social apps without much trouble. Heavier modern games run at reduced settings, and the phone has no hardware support for the on-device AI features that newer handsets now advertise.
When new, the 4,200mAh battery comfortably lasted a full day and often longer. On a second-hand unit the real question is battery health: after several years of charging, capacity will usually have dropped noticeably.
