Good Omens season 3 is already out, and it is not really a season. Amazon put a single feature-length episode, titled “The Finale”, on Prime Video on 13 May 2026. Aziraphale and Crowley get their ending in one sitting. Getting there was messy. A six-episode order shrank to one film after Neil Gaiman left the production in October 2024. Release date, runtime and what came before

Prime Video released the episode worldwide on Wednesday 13 May 2026. Amazon described it as a 90-minute special when the format changed, though the finished cut runs closer to 99 minutes. That is a nine-minute difference, which matters if you are planning an evening around it.

That gap was long. Series one arrived on 31 May 2019 with six episodes, then aired weekly on BBC Two from 15 January to 19 February 2020. Series two followed on 28 July 2023, again with six episodes. Almost three years passed before the last one appeared. Filming took five weeks across January and February 2025. Rachel Talalay took over as director. Douglas Mackinnon, who directed and co-ran the first two series, did not return for the last one.

Why Good Omens season 3 became a single episode

The final run was commissioned in December 2023 as six episodes, the same length as the first two. Then the reporting started. From July 2024, several women accused Neil Gaiman of sexual assault, in accounts published by Tortoise Media and later covered by the New York Times. Gaiman has denied engaging in non-consensual sexual activity. Production on the third series was suspended in September 2024 while Amazon worked out what to do.

In October 2024, the decision landed. Gaiman exited the production, and the six-episode order was cut to one feature-length episode. He is credited with the story, and he shares the teleplay credit, but he no longer runs the show or produces it. Michael Marshall Smith and Peter Atkins did the compression work, folding six scripts into one film.

Adapting a much-loved author for the screen is rarely tidy even in calm conditions, and these were not calm conditions. Anyone who has followed the long, uneven run of Stephen King screen adaptations will recognise the pattern of rewrites, dropped plans and reshaped endings.

How to watch it in the UK, and what it costs

Prime Video is the only route. This is an Amazon original, so a membership covers it at no extra charge. There is no BBC iPlayer version, which surprises people who remember series one on BBC Two.

What happens in “The Finale”

Aziraphale, now Supreme Archangel, begins arranging the Second Coming and assigns Sandalphon to keep watch over the resurrected Jesus. Then the Metatron disappears. Jesus goes missing in the confusion, and so does the Book of Life. Aziraphale goes looking, finds Crowley instead, and the two of them patch things up. The culprit turns out to be Michael, who has been removing anything standing between her and the Apocalypse. She burns Uriel’s page from the Book of Life, erasing her, then keeps going: people, continents, Hell, Jesus. Aziraphale catches up with her and forgives her. Guilt does the rest, and she burns her own page.

That leaves an angel and a demon as the last beings standing, alongside God and Satan. They ask for a different universe, one with no Heaven, no Hell and no management, where humans get on with it. God agrees and wipes everything, the pair included. One last scene sits elsewhere. A professor named Anthony Crowley meets a bookseller named Asa Fell, who invites him to dinner. Twenty years on, the two are married and living in a cottage in the South Downs, and Crowley decides he already has everything he wanted.

How it was received

Critics were mixed rather than hostile. The episode holds 62% on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer from 21 reviews, with a consensus that calls it a serviceable send-off carried by its two leads. Jack Seale in the Guardian gave it two stars. Ed Power in the Daily Telegraph gave it four. Radio Times settled on three.

Viewers were tougher. The audience score sits at 32% from more than a thousand ratings. Their complaint is not the length but the shape: storylines that start and go nowhere, plus an ending that undoes the world the book built. Some fans loved the last scene in the cottage. Plenty did not.

Will there be a season 4?

No. This was always planned as the closing chapter, and the episode was written to finish the story rather than set anything up. Amazon has not announced a revival, a spin-off, or a follow-up in another format.

If you want more television on that scale afterwards, the fantasy shelf is deep. Sean Bean’s screen credits run through most of the genre’s landmark series and make a reasonable map of where to go next.
